The attractions of the Kinmen National Park are concentrated primarily in battlefield scenery and the features of a park on the sea. This is the first national park in the Taiwan area that focuses on the preservation of historic assets and war memorials as well as on the conservation of natural resources.
The national park is divided into the Guningtou Area, Mt. Taiwu Area, Gugang Area, Mashan Area, Fuguidun Area and Lieyu Area. The land is hilly and composed mainly of granite, and it has an interesting natural environment. Because it is just off the coast of China, it serves as a midway station for migrating birds; a total of 199 species have been observed here, making this an ideal place for watching and studying birds. The best places for bird-watching are the coastline between Gugang and Shuitou, Jinsha Reservoir, Lingshui Lake, Cihu, and the mouth of the Wujiang River.
You can have an intensely engrossing historical tour here, for in addition to its battlefield sites Kinmen also boasts 21 national-class historic sites as well as the traditional settlements at Oucuo, Zhushan, Shuitou, Qionglin, Shanhou, Nanshan, and Beishan, where large numbers of traditional houses in the style of Zhangzhou and Quanzhou in Fujian Province are still remained well. Another special feature of Kinmen's cultural landscape is its clan shrines, which here have the most density than anywhere else in the Taiwan area.
Mt. Taiwu Area: This area, rich in battlefield sites, is situated in the central part of Kinmen Island and is an important memorial of the Aug. 28 artillery war. From the top of the mountain you have an overlook view of the island's rural scenery. There is also an Aug. 28 museum here as well as a Jiang Jing-guo Memorial Hall, the Mt. Taiwu Cemetery, and other battlefield sites, as well as the traditional Qionglin settlement and the one-gate, three-sections house, the tomb of Chiu Liang-kung, and the Cai shrine.
Gugang Area: Located in the southwestern part of the island, this area features traditional settlements, historic sites, military engineering works, lakes, and coastal terrain. Its tourist sites include the Cuishan small-boat tunnel and Wentai Pagoda, as well as traditional settlements at Oucuo, Zhushan, and Shantou.
Guningtou Area: Located in the northwestern part of the island, this is the memorial ground of the Battle of Guningtou. Its main tourist sites include such battlefield memorials as the Guningtou Cliff and the Guningtou War Museum, as well as traditional settlements at Nanshan and Beishan and such historic sites as the Zhenwei Official Residence and Shuiwei Tower. This is also the location of the Cihu Scenic Area, which is a good place for bird watching.
Mashan Area: This area at the southeastern corner of the island is rich in coastal terrain. Its famous tourist sites include the Shanhou Folk Culture Village and the Five Tigers Mountain hiking trail.
Lieyu Area: Here, you can observe the rich wetland biological resources of Lingshui Lake.
