The simple lifestyle of olden times is still preserved in Jiufen. In addition to sublime mountain and coastal scenery, the unique mining culture and the gold mining history here are worthy of your visit. People who visit the rustic old streets can experience the rich ancient culture and taste traditional country snacks like herbal cakes and taro balls.
Shuqi Rd. climbs steeply through Jiufen, its stone steps presenting the special atmosphere of 1930's architecture. The stone- step road attracts numerous visitors, including artists, media workers, and commercial producers, many of whom come to take photographs here. When climbing up the steps, visitors can smell the rich scent of tea filling the air. The town's scenic spots, including the Taiyang Mining Office, Peng Garden, Gold Mining Museum, Shengming Temple, and Jiufen Elementary School, are also worth visiting.
Qingbian Rd. was a famous red-light district in the past. The road rises gradually and provieds expansive views, making this an excellent scenic outlook. At the crossroad of Qingbian Rd. and Shuqi Rd., you can see the famous scene where a coffee commercial was shot, the "Folk Art Gallery," on your left and, on your right, the red-light district from the movie "City of Sadness" now rebuilt into the City of Sadness Restaurant.
Besides touring around the ancient scenes of Jiufen itself, visitors can also find numerous attractions in neighboring areas:Mt. Keelung, Fushan Temple, Jinguashi mining operations, the Crown Prince Chalet, and ruins of the Gold Shinto Shrine. They can also go sightseeing at Fulong and other sights of the Northeast Coast along the Coastal Highway. In the area of Keelung, they can visit Badouzi Beach Park or enjoy a great meal at the Keelung Night Market.
