Date:2021-01-21 Number of Visitors:2426

The 2021 Taiwan Lantern Festival, co-organized by the Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation & Communications (MOTC) and the Hsinchu City Government, has been cancelled in light of new developments related to the COVID-19 epidemic. Premier Su Tseng-chang hosted an inter-ministerial meeting on January 19th and received professional opinions from the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) and the Hsinchu City Government. MOTC Minister Lin Chia-lung then asked the Tourism Bureau to provide full support to the Hsinchu City Government in carrying out subsequent implementation efforts and measures.

Regarding COVID-19, the CECC announced today that two new imported cases and four new domestic cases have been confirmed. Thus, in accordance with the Lantern Festival's COVID-19 prevention plan and CECC regulations, the City Government recommended that this year's Lantern Festival should be cancelled.

The Tourism Bureau noted that many designers and artists have contributed much to the festival's preparations. The Bureau will help them complete their works, discuss alternative plans, and display the works when the timing is right again.

Despite challenging circumstances around the world, due to the efforts of everyone in Taiwan we have accomplished much in the fight against COVID-19. Cancelling the event was a difficult decision to make. The festival organizers hope that all segments of the community will understand the important reasons behind this decision, in particular the top priority placed on fighting this epidemic. All governmental units are working together in the effort to prohibit this disease from gaining a foothold in Taiwan.
