The 2023 Taiwan Lantern Festival will take place from February 5 to 19 in Taipei’s East District, Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, Xinyi Commercial District and Taipei 101 areas. The main lantern, created by artist Akibo Lee, will be installed at the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. The lantern is the first ever produced using robot modeling technology and features a giant 22-meter-tall jade hare in a space suit. The theme was inspired by Taiwan’s leading role in the global semiconductor industry and several technologies are used to showcase the centerpiece. The lantern’s theme music was specially created by Golden Melody Award winner George Chen, and performance capture technology will enable the rabbit to emulate the facial expressions of Olympic gold medalist weightlifter Kuo Hsing-chun. The overall performance will symbolize the vitality of Taiwan's freedom and democracy and express the infinite possibilities of the country's future.

Master calligrapher Chang Ping-huang wrote the inscription for the main lantern, “Brilliant Light of the Jade Hare”. The Jade Hare is not only full of technology, but also incorporates elements of traditional Taiwanese opera along with hopes for stability, peace, happiness, prosperity, and brightness in the new year.

The annual lantern festival small paper lantern is greatly anticipated by the young and young of heart each year. This year’s design is inspired by the White Rabbit in the classic children's story "Alice in Wonderland". The multi-colored “Aspirational Rainbow Rabbit" should be a cute and dazzling addition to this year’s lantern festival. Not only can the lantern be assembled to form a small lantern, it can also be turned into a pair of bunny ears lit with LED lights that can turn anyone into a shining bunny.

The 2023 Taiwan Lantern Festival is scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm on Sunday, February 5, 2023. A musical light show will take place at the main lantern every half hour, and the event will continue until the evening of Sunday, February 19. The Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications warmly invites everyone from home and abroad to come to Taipei to celebrate an optimistic and colorful Lantern Festival!
