Central Taiwan offers a pleasant climate and beautiful scenery. This area is endowed with rich natural, cultural and commercial resources that provide an excellent base for tourism development. Seeing this, the Tourism Administration of the Ministry of Transportation & Communications created the Tri-Mountain National Scenic Area by merging the three scenic areas of Lion's Head Mountain, Lishan and Baguashan. Its administrative area includes parts of the counties of Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua and Nantou, within which are 18 townships and urban areas. It covers an area of about 77,521 hectares. The new scenic area was created in March 2001.
A rich and varied topography offers amazing landscapes filled with mountains, lakes, canyons, and waterfalls. This variety also supports a rich diversity of animals, including birds, fish and insects. The trees and flowers beautifully change with the seasons.
Cultural diversity is also abundant here. Several ethnic groups live in this mountainous area, including those from the Hakka, Minnan, Saixia and Atayal cultures. Their relics and traditions are precious assets that are preserved and supported here. Physical structures, such as temples and historic houses, are also tangible parts of this area’s long history, and allow visitors to deepen their understanding of these cultures.
In addition to tours that highlight the elements above, dynamic LOHAS tours are also available. Visitors can enjoy a range of walking and cycling trails, for example, and mountaineering options are also available. One can escape the heat of Taiwan’s summers by walking the cool trails surrounded by greenery. In winter, high-quality hot springs provide an excellent venue for relaxing and warming up.
Due to its favorable geographical location, suitable climatic conditions, and excellent soil and water quality, many agricultural specialties are cultivated in the scenic area, including fruits, vegetables, tea, and trout. These are all fresh and delicious additions to the local menus. The area’s teas are well-known, and include the Oriental Beauty Tea of Lion's Head Mountain, the high mountain tea of Lishan and Baguashan’s Evergreen Tea, grown next to forests of pine and cypress. Aboriginal and Hakka cuisines are also on the list of must-try items for visitors.
