The Central Cross-Island Highway extends from Taroko Gorge on the east coast to Dongshi in the west. It divides at Li Mountain (Lishan) into eastern and western sections, the former passing through the Liwu River basin and latter through the Dajia River basin. It reaches the highest point (2,565 meters above sea level) in Dayuling, where the highway forks to Wushe.

The eastern section of the highway passes through the sheer marble walls of the famous Taroko Gorge, winding along the Liru River through numerous tunnels. Along the western section, visitors can see the river terrace and canyon carved by the Dajia River near Guguan. Li Mountain (Lishan), Deji Reservoir, Guguan Hot Spring and Dongshi Forest are among the top attractions in this area.

Li Mountain (Lishan) is located in Heping Township, Taichung County, at an elevation of 1,670 meters. A tourism and busation hub on the Central Cross-Island Highway, it is also well known for its apples, pears and peaches. Visitors can learn about the local history at the Li Mountain (Lishan) Culture Museum. The nearby Fushou Mountain Farm (elev. 2000 meters) produces highly-rated vegetables and fruit. Chiang Kai-shek often visited the Daguan Pavilion in the back mountain area here. The pavilion looks out to Heavenly Pond surrounded by pines.

The Guguan Hot Springs are fed by alkaline carbonic acid water purported to relieve arthritis, nervous pain, and skin conditions. Bathers can also enjoy the cherry blossoms in spring and maple colors in fall. Other attractions at the nearby Dragon Valley Nature Park include the Longgu Waterfall, forest trails, a zoo, bird park, and amusement rides, all set within a 1.6-kilometer area along the Dajia River.
