Occupying an area of about 100 hectares, the Ren Shan Botanical Garden is located due north of the Central Mountain Range at an elevation between 50m and 500m. The prevailing climate type experienced there is the low-elevation subtropical northeast monsoon rain forest type. In the north there are the Lanyang Plain and the Pacific Ocean, while the Xinliao Mountain, Xinliao Fall and Jiuliao Fall are located at its back. As the garden is not far from the city, the transportation there is very convenient. There are good hiking and recreational facilities inside the garden attracting people to go hiking there often.
The Yilan County Government began the garden planning in 2001 to diversify the garden functions in order to turn the garden into a botanical garden that combines recreational, living, ecological and educational functions.
