The 2025 Taiwan Lantern Festival will be held in Taoyuan City from February 12-23. It has been nine years since the Lantern Festival was last held in Taoyuan. As the site of this year's festival is quite close to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, the Tourism Administration has specially launched a limited itinerary that will help transit tourists visit the festival.
The Administration stated that scheduled guided tours and recommended routes for self-guided tours will be available. For the former, a dedicated tour guide will plan the tour and guide tourists through the Taiwan Lantern Festival in Taoyuan. This festival will feature more than 300 lanterns, which combine craftsmanship, bamboo art, interactive technologies and traditional lantern techniques. The main lantern, named "Infinite Paradise," was designed by noted artist Akibo Lee. The work breaks new ground by being the first lantern to use modern abstract shapes. It uses AI and 3D naked-eye technologies to inject ever-changing images onto the tubular structure. These tell the story of Taiwan's global activities, as well as welcoming the world to Taiwan. Two recommended self-guided tours are "Fun in the Taoyuan Shopping District" and "Exploring Nature and Art In Depth." These combine the Lantern Festival with other cultural attractions through February 23rd. The tours include Taoyuan Airport MRT redemption coupons and discount introductions to at least 20 entities in and around the airport. These allow transit passengers to enjoy beautiful sights and experience authentic Taiwanese flavors.
In addition to the limited itineraries during the Lantern Festival, Taiwan provides three types of group guided tours for transit passengers all year round. These take visitors to Taipei City, New Taipei City and Taoyuan City, allowing them to explore Taiwan's culture and history. Also available are six self-guided tours that take visitors to scenic spots in Taipei and elsewhere along the Taoyuan MRT line for passengers using Taoyuan Airport MRT Vouchers.
The Tourism Administration has opened reservations for tour registration via the event website (https://halfdaytour.taiwan.net.tw/). The tours are available between February 12-23 for foreign transit tourists staying in Taiwan between 7 to 24 hours, and who hold a valid visa or a visa-free entry to Taiwan. The Administration notes that tourists who want to sign up for a scheduled guided tour can apply on the event website 5 to 90 days before arriving in Taiwan or contact the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Tourist Service Center to sign up on the same day. Passengers who wish to reserve a self-guided tour should apply on the website at least five days before arriving in Taiwan and check in at one of the Tourist Service Center counters located in the arrival halls of each of the airport's terminals. The counter staff can provide Taoyuan Airport MRT Vouchers.
Director-General of the Tourism Administration, Chou Yong-Hui, noted that foreign transit passengers in Taiwan mainly come from North America, Southeast Asia, Europe, New Zealand and Australia. The Administration is optimistic that increased flights will spur a growth in transit passengers. It hopes that the Taiwan Lantern Festival's limited-time itinerary and connecting flights related to Expo 2025 to be held in Osaka, Japan from April to October will drive a new wave of transit passengers to Taiwan. Add Taiwan to your wish list of foreign destinations and enjoy our land's unique cultural charms.
