Day1: Maolin National Scenic Area, Longtoushan Scenic Area
Maolin National Scenic Area
Maolin National Scenic Area crosses over Taoyuan, Liouguei, and Maolin Districts – traveling through the high mountains, steep canyons, meandering streams, waterfalls, gorges, and hot springs within the Central Mountain Range. These areas are also where Bunun and Rukai indigenous tribes have traditionally lived in. Plentiful natural resources and world-class overwintering purple butterfly valley can also be found here. Within the indigenous tribes, there are stone slab houses, suspension bridges, humanistic and cultural ceremonies, and distinctive gourmet dishes, making the tribes popular sites for people to experience indigenous cultures.
Purple Butterfly Valley
Maolin, Kaohsiung has been the primary area where Purple Butterfly Valley spreads out across. Every November through next March, there would be an estimate of more than a million purple-spotted butterflies that would carry their hang-glider-like purple wings and fly to the warm and wind-shielded valley, at the foot of Rukai and Paiwan people's "sacred mountain" - Kavulungan in southern Taiwan. They would come as a overwintering "corporate group" of more than 1 million members – thereby forming the "Purple Butterfly Valley". Maolin is also one of their habitats.
Kungadavane Tribe Guided Tour
Kungadavane Tribe is situated at the marsh west of Neibenlushan of the Central Mountain Range, at an altitude of approximately 450m. It is the tribe situated deepest into Maolin District – as Kungadavane is surrounded by mountains and possesses bountiful water resources and fertile land, countless groups of Rukai people have been attracted to inhabit here over the past several centuries; Kungadavane is also one of the oldest indigenous tribes in Taiwan. Mandarin name for Kungadavane – "duo-na" came from Japanese transliteration of its ancient name "dun-zi". Over the past centuries, traditional stone slab houses have been passed down to keep the people warm during wintertime and cool during summer, and they are sturdy and durable. Till this day, one can still spot these stone slab houses paved with clayslate in the indigenous tribes, which fully exhibit indigenous peoples' everyday wisdom.
Day2: Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Cultural Park, Rukai Tribe Culture
Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Cultural Park, Shanchuan Glass Suspension Bridge
In order to preserve aboriginal culture and resources, the government established Taiwan Indigenous Culture Park in Pingtung County in 1987. The park is 82.65 hectares in area, presenting each of the aboriginal tribes and their characteristics. The park is next to Fugu Bay, which as a natural and graceful scenery. There are no modern architectures in the vicinity. With the convenient bus station, the park is perfect for holiday recreation.
The Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Cultural Park has traditional tribal cabins, which are located according to each tribe's tradition and lifestyle. There are a wax figure room, a multimedia room and an exhibition room in the park, presenting the development and culture of the aboriginal tribes. The handicraft room shows how the aborigines create their unique handcrafts.

Wutai Tribe
Known as the "Township of Clouds and Mists", Wutai is the indigenous tribe in Pingtung County to be situated at the highest altitude. With an average elevation of 1,000m, Wutai is embraced by clouds and mists throughout the year and is also the most well-known cherry blossom appreciating tribe in Taiwan's most southern end. The magnificent and beautiful natural sceneries are filled with Rukai tribe’s traditional cultures. Observing the living environment, one would find the ubiquitous ceramic art and stone slab houses; and public art designed with the thematic images of Vai (God of the Sun), five pacer, and lily also leave visitors in awe.
Day3: Wutai Tribe, Sandimen
Sandimen Art Village
Sandi Village is the political and economic center of Sandimen Township in Pingtung County. Streets here are designed in orderly grid plan; buildings constructed along the hill appear to be arranged as a gently ascending staircase if looking from a distance, giving this place a distinctive tribal appearance. Sandi Village is famous for its craft art – artistic level for its all kinds of craftworks are of high caliber, which have not only stimulated local tourism development but have also been carrying the mission of cultural inheritance.
