Stepping onto the campus of Tunghai University, set against the slopes of Mount Dadu in Taichung, the first sight to greet visitors is the graceful stretch of Yuenong Road, lined with lush green Delonix regia trees. Along the straight Wenli Boulevard, ancient banyan trees join overhead like massive umbrellas, forming a serene green tunnel. Low-placed street lamps cast a soft glow, adding a romantic charm after dark.
Sitting on the open lawn between the Student Activity Center and the academic area stands the university's most famous landmark—the Luce Chapel, designed by the renowned architect I. M. Pei. Featuring sweeping, sail-like curved roofs covered in yellow glazed tiles, it serves as the spiritual heart of the campus.
Located on the southwestern slope of the campus, the 50-hectare Tunghai Ranch was cleared and cultivated through the effort of the College of Agriculture students. Nearby lies Tunghai Lake, home to the Dongmei Pavilion along its banks, built in memory of the great philosopher Thomé H. Fang. Dense woodlands, stream channels, thickets, grassy lawns, and the artificial lake make the campus a favored destination for birdwatching.
