Sweet Persimmons and Pears
The hilly terrain and dry climate of Xinpu create the perfect conditions for growing and drying persimmons. Fragrant and chewy, the township's dried persimmons are widely known and loved.

Pears are another trademark crop of Xinpu. The pear harvest begins to hit the market in mid-June but the best pears ripen around mid-July. Xinpu also produces Taiwan's last-harvested winter pears. The annual pear production of Xinpu Township is about 32,000 kilograms. They are sold at most supermarkets and can also be enjoyed directly from the rustic orchards of Xinpu.

Hakka Life and Temples
About 90 percent of the residents of Xinpu Township are Hakka. The ethnic composition is evident in the simplicity and work ethic of the people, as well as in the unique local architecture of the town. Many of the townspeople wake and retire each day with the sun, leading a life closely linked to the land.

Although the traditional culture and way of life of the Hakka people has ebbed with the decline of the agrarian economy in Taiwan, one can still catch a rare glimpse of this earlier life in at several well-preserved Hakka historic sites in Xinpu, such as the Liu Family Ancestral Shrine, Heping Street, and Shuangtangwu. There are also plenty of eateries in Xinpu serving up authentic Hakka cuisine with that old-time taste.
