Green Island Lighthouse stands on a highland on the northwest coast of Green Island (Ludao Township) in Taitung County. It was built in 1939 with funds donated by the American Red Cross the year before in gratitude to the residents of Green Island for bravely rescuing passengers of the ocean liner SS President Hoover after it hit a reef off the island. The white, tubular lighthouse tower rises 33.3 meters. The top, reached by a stairway of 150 steps, commands a sweeping view of the island. In the months of March to May, the area in front of the lighthouse turns into a vast colorful field of blossoming wild lilies.
