The Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage at Gongtian Temple in Tongxiao Township, Miaoli County is an annual folk event with a history of more than 100 years. Along with its long history and grand scale, the festival attracts residents every year from all over the country who enthusiastically participate in the pilgrimage to the Beigang Chaotian Temple on foot. The entire journey is nearly 400 kms, and spans four counties and cities in central Taiwan. Due to its tradition and uniqueness, it was designated as an important national folk ritual by the Ministry of Culture in 2010 and was selected as one of the Top 100 Religious Attractions of Taiwan by the Ministry of the Interior in 2013.
