Situated on the Chilai Pi Promontory at the northern side of Hualien Harbor, the Chilai Pi Lighthouse stands on a high cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. First built in 1931 during the Japanese colonial period, the original structure suffered severe damage from Allied bombing during World War II and was rendered inoperative. To meet the shipping demands of expanding Hualien Harbor as an international port, the customs authorities rebuilt the current lighthouse on the original site in 1963.
The Chilai Pi Lighthouse features a unique pentagonal concrete tower structure, standing at a height of 13.4 meters with a focal plane (light height) of 33.4 meters above sea level. Painted in crisp white, it is the only pentagonal lighthouse in Taiwan. Although the grounds are closed to the general public, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the lighthouse from the nearby Huadong Road coastal path or the Hualien Port area. Set against the backdrop of the majestic Central Mountain Range and the endless blue of the Pacific Ocean, it serves as a historic maritime guardian and a spectacular, scenic landmark along the Hualien coast.
The interior of the lighthouse grounds is not open to the public. (Exterior viewing available year-round)
