Boasting rich biodiversity and a beautiful natural environment, Fuli Township has promoted eco-friendly organic farming for many years. It is a member of the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI) and the first region in Taiwan to receive the prestigious "Class Special-A" certification from Japan's Paddy Field Environment Assessment. The township features approximately 2,500 hectares of paddy fields, 200 hectares of daylilies, 60 hectares of bamboo forests, 50 hectares of plum trees, and about 50 hectares allocated for other crops such as tea, coffee, and soybeans.
The creative philosophy behind the Fuli Straw Art Festival focuses on repurposing agricultural straw waste and passing down the near-forgotten local craft of bamboo weaving, transforming these materials into boundless, imaginative artworks. Grounded in the circular economy and the spirit of the Satoyama Initiative, the festival emphasizes "harmonious coexistence with nature," aiming to introduce visitors to the various creatures that share rural farm life through these artistic creations.
Emphasizing the core concept of "co-creating landscapes with farmers," the Fuli Farmers' Association collaborated with domestic bamboo artists and universities starting from the festival's inaugural year. By involving local villages and schools in the creative process, the annual event now draws over a million visitors. This has not only stimulated the development of local leisure industries but has also established the Straw Art Festival as the most significant community celebration for the people of Fuli.
