Built in 1900, the Keelung Lighthouse is located at Wanrendui Nose on the western wharf side of Keelung Harbor. The structure was originally a white, circular brick tower, which was later rebuilt into a reinforced concrete circular tower in 1962. Wanrendui Nose was originally a piece of reclaimed land abounding with rocks. It derived its name from the surrounding numerous strange crags and jagged rocks that looked like countless noses piled up and arrayed together; however, it has now been redeveloped into Pier 30.
In its early years, the Keelung Lighthouse was uniquely equipped with a red sector light to mark the position of "HSIN LAI ROCK" (a submerged reef) outside the harbor. This submerged reef was extremely dangerous, and several ships had previously struck it, leading to maritime disasters. Following the completion of the project to blast and remove "HSIN LAI ROCK" in 1989, the dangerous reef was eliminated, and the red sector light was subsequently changed to a white light.
