The Tjuvecekadan (Old Qijia Tribe) stone slab house settlement is situated approximately 15 kilometers northeast of the Chunri Township boundaries, nestled between the Qijia Creek and Lili Creek. The settlement preserves 50 intact traditional stone slab houses, making it the most well-preserved traditional architectural settlement with the largest quantity and most complete layout in Taiwan.
In addition to being registered as a settlement-type cultural asset of Pingtung County in 2010, the human resources within the area—comprising the organic integration of the settlement landscape and the natural mountainous scenery—are clearly arranged and well-preserved. It vividly records the traditional settlement spaces, domestic spaces, house forecourts, quarries, water sources, and traditional territories of the Paiwan and Rukai peoples. Meeting the criteria for World Heritage registration, it was also included as one of Taiwan's Potential World Heritage Sites in 2013.
According to tribal oral history and historical documents, Tjuvecekadan had already migrated to this site as early as 400 years ago during the Dutch and Qing periods. Throughout the Japanese ruling period and the arrival of the Nationalist Government in Taiwan, because the settlement's location was secluded yet strategically advantageous, it fortunately preserved its 400-year-old primitive cultural and human landscape. Although the members of this tribe migrated to the New Qijia Tribe in 1972, the maintenance and inheritance of the tribe's traditional cultural assets remain visible and flourish to this day, making it truly the finest venue for environmental education in indigenous homelands.
