The former site of the Ciou Family's Henan Tang Zhongshi Di is the Ciou Residence "Ciou Zhai Zhong," a typical Hakka residence. In 1900, it took three years to construct this exquisite grand courtyard house, "Zhongshi Di." The butong is the walkway in front of the ancestral hall of Zhongshi Di. Looking up along the walkway, the two pairs of wood-carved sitting lions, known as "lion-shaped dou blocks," on the front veranda exhibit the strongest sense of three-dimensionality. Other wood carvings under the eaves, such as the lantern-like "hanging handrails" (diaotong) and "sparrows" (queti), evoke a profound sense of nostalgia.
The Ciou Family Ancient House measures 29 meters long from east to west and 24 meters long from south to north, presenting a shape resembling the Chinese character "four" (四). It is a courtyard building with a layout of "two halls and two horizontal wings." The central courtyard, surrounded by the front hall, rear hall, and connecting corridors, serves as the center of the entire architectural complex. It is further configured with horizontal wings, corridor rooms, and open-air courtyards added to the left and right, combining to form a complete layout. It is a rare and classic window into Hakka traditional architecture in the urban area.
