The predecessor of the "Pingtung 1936 Tobacco Culture Base" was the Pingtung Tobacco Factory, which was completed in 1936 and was once the largest primary tobacco processing factory in Taiwan. It witnessed the booming development of Pingtung's tobacco and agricultural industries. Following the cessation of operations in 2002, the County Government initiated the restoration of the historical buildings in 2010 and integrated them into the Grand Museum Project. By combining industry, art, and cultural memory, the site was transformed into a multicultural venue.
The base features the Tobacco Leaf Museum, Hakka Museum, Indigenous Peoples Museum, Immersive Museum, and Museum of Art, becoming a core platform for preserving local knowledge and showcasing cultural charm. Through phased openings and diverse exhibition activities, it is progressively building Pingtung's cultural brand, strengthening the connection between residents and the land, and demonstrating Pingtung's cultural confidence and innovative energy as it steps onto the international stage.
