Located beside Maolishan Park in Miaoli City, Miaoli Tunnel spans a total length of 460 meters and was completed in 1903. It is also known as Gongweixu Tunnel because of the characters "Gong Wei Xu" inscribed at its northern entrance by Gentaro Kodama.
Following the completion of the Mountain Line double-tracking railway project in 1998, trains were rerouted to the newly constructed "Miaonan Tunnel," leading to the decommissioning of Gongweixu Tunnel. It remained unused until 2003, when the Miaoli City Office undertook its restoration. The tunnel structure is exceptionally well-preserved; its northern entrance in particular features elegant red-brick masonry, with Gentaro Kodama's calligraphy remaining vividly engraved above it to this day. Inside, colorful changing lights illuminate the passage at set intervals, creating a dazzling display that lights up historical footprints and transforms the tunnel into a popular new attraction in Miaoli.
