Built in 1937, Tongxiao Shrine is located on a hillside in Hutoushan Park, less than 100 meters above sea level. In November 2002 it was designated as a Miaoli County Historical Building. The shrine is Tongxiao's most famous historic site, as well as one of only a few Japanese Shinmei style buildings in Taiwan. Shinto shrines are centers of faith for the Japanese. Most of the 200 such shrines built in Taiwan during Japanese rule have been demolished. Tongxiao Shrine is one of the few intact shrines from that time. The main hall and offertory hall of the shrine were demolished, leaving only their foundations. However, the atmosphere of the Japanese Shinto shrine still remains palpable here.
