Nanyuan was built by United Daily News founder Mr. Wang Tiwu in 1985. The 27-hectare mountainside garden was designed by the seminal Taiwanese architect Han Pao-teh. The structures here are built of Taiwan cypress using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. The southern Chinese style garden combines with an architectural style joining traditional Chinese and southern Fujianese architectural elements to create a finely crafted, eden-like escape. Nanyuan has hosted numerous foreign heads of state and VIPs, including former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. In 2008, the property came under the management of resort company The One. It currently offers hotel, spa, restaurant, and other services. This is also the first cultural leisure park in Taiwan to win Japan's Good Design Award.
