The "Young Marshal" Zhang Xue-liang was the eldest son of the "Old Marshal," Fengtian clique leader Zhang Zuo-lin. As co-instigator with Yang Hu-cheng of the Xi'an Incident in 1936, he forced the Nationalist generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek to stop the war against the Chinese communists and join the fight against Japan, confirming his place as an influential figure in modern Chinese history. In 1946, Zhang left Chongqing and came to Taiwan. For the next 50-some years, he would remain under house arrest in Taiwan, with 13 of those years spent at the residence in Wufeng. Countless stories and happenings unfolded here during that time. Today the residence introduces the life of Zhang Xue-liang with historical exhibits and displays of rare old photos, personal writings, and recorded interviews. In 2014, the residence was rebuilt on the original site and integrated with an indigenous museum as the "Zhang Xueliang Cultural Park."
