Due to its position as a transportation hub and its fertile agricultural lands, Cishan has seen a gathering of officials and merchants since the Qing Dynasty, enjoying a period of great prosperity. Strolling through the century-old mountain town old street, where history and humanity converge, the red brick buildings decorated with Baroque facades and the arcade porches (ting-a-ka) built with stacked sandstone arches all exude an elegant and classical atmosphere. Furthermore, multiple buildings have been designated as monuments or cultural assets, making them well worth visiting and appreciating one by one.

The Cishan Old Street commercial district, spanning the area around Cishan Railway Station, Fuxing Street, Zhongshan Road, and Huazhong Street, saw a boom in European-style pseudo-Baroque architectural styles due to the economy generated by the sugar refining industry. Looking down the street, most of the western-style buildings exhibit this architectural style, interspersed with the purely Chinese-style Hong Residence and the luxurious Wu Family Ancient Mansion. Behind them, the Cishan Railway Station features a Victorian exterior and a Gothic octagonal sloped roof.

Having such a diverse range of architectural styles on a single street does not feel out of place; instead, it creates a unique and wondrous sensation of misplaced time and space. This singular architectural style connects the past with the present, serving as the special charm of the Cishan Old Street commercial district. Additionally, the famous variety of traditional local snacks, as well as locally featured banana desserts and ice products, leave visitors with an unforgettable aftertaste.
