Hebao Mountain was widely cultivated with coffee trees during the Japanese occupation, earning the area the nickname of "Coffee Mountain." The mountain is 300 meters above sea level and located at the same latitude as well-known coffee producer Jamaica. With its well drained sandy soil, subtropical climate, and ample rain and sun, the area is especially well suited for growing the arabica coffee trees planted here, giving its home township of Gukeng a reputation as Taiwan's coffee country. The local beans can also be enjoyed at the many coffee shops here.
