TAIPEI, TAIWAN – To align with sustainable tourism trends and meet the growing demands of independent travelers, the Tourism Administration, Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), has announced a comprehensive upgrade to its popular "Taiwan PASS" transportation e-vouchers, effective April 1st, 2026. The original five product categories have been streamlined into two optimized versions: the "High Speed Rail (HSR) Edition" (exclusive to international visitors) and the "Taiwan Railway (TR) Edition" (available to both domestic and international travelers).
The upgraded Taiwan PASS now integrates four major metropolitan MRT systems and 15 scenic area shuttle services. By seamlessly connecting diverse transportation modes, the pass enhances travel convenience between urban cores and popular tourist attractions, thereby maximizing the economic benefits of cross-regional tourism.
Simplified Options for Comprehensive Travel The Tourism Administration explained that this overhaul simplifies the previous complex array of products into two core offerings: the HSR Edition (priced at NT$2,800) and the TR Edition (priced at NT$2,500). Both versions center on a "3-Day Unlimited Pass" for their respective rail systems to address long-distance travel needs. Additionally, travelers can select one of four major metropolitan MRT systems and one of 15 scenic shuttle services, allowing for effortless exploration of Taiwan’s top destinations with a single pass.
Solving the "Last Mile" Connection To address transportation gaps upon reaching destinations, the Taiwan PASS scenic shuttle service now includes four popular "Taiwan Tourist Shuttle" routes: Cingjing, Sun Moon Lake, Alishan, and Kenting. It also offers flexible options such as the Alishan Forest Railway, Yilan 3-Day Pass, Taichung Go, Kaohsiung MeN Go, and vouchers for car rentals or taxis. Furthermore, the new version introduces 24-hour scooter rentals and "FunTOUR" one-day bus tours in Yilan and Sun Moon Lake, combining transportation with self-guided commentary to lead travelers on in-depth explorations of local characteristics.
Strong Market Growth and Global Appeal Since its launch in 2024, the Taiwan PASS has sold over 34,000 units. Sales in the first quarter of this year saw a significant 59% increase compared to the same period last year. Data indicates that primary international markets include Japan (19.9%), the Philippines (17.2%), Malaysia (10.6%), and South Korea (10.4%), with the North American market (6.4%) showing steady growth.
The Taiwan PASS effectively encourages travelers to extend their journeys across different regions. Moving forward, the Tourism Administration will continue to promote the PASS through integrated scenic shuttle products and domestic/international marketing channels, inviting more travelers to experience Taiwan’s natural landscapes and cultural charms.
