Shenkeng, literally "deep pit," is located in a mountainous area with a pit-shaped terrain, giving the district its name. At one time, all traffic between Taipei and Yilan passed through here. The area was also an entrepot for tea and dyestuff , giving rise to today's Shenkeng Old Street. The large bishopwood tree at the old street entrance is a local landmark. Shenkeng Old Street is well-known for its food. Visitors are especially attracted by the street's famous tofu dishes, including delicious tofu stewed in brown sauce, black tofu, and grilled stinky tofu. The four specialties of the local cuisine are green bamboo shoots, black pork, white tofu, and Wenshan Baozhong tea. These "four treasures" can be enjoyed in seasonal dishes served at local restaurants.
