The bedrock of the various islands in the Matsu area is primarily composed of granitic rocks. Over many years of weathering and wave erosion, landforms such as sea-cliffs, reefs, and sea caves have been formed. In 2018, in accordance with the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act, Matsu became the first local-level "Matsu Geological Park."

The entire county is divided into 10 scenic areas, which are:

  • Dongyin Township: Xiyin Coastal Scenic Area, Dongyin Shiweishan Scenic Area.
  • Beigan Township: Da'aoshan Scenic Area.
  • Nangan Township: Qiuguishan Coastal Scenic Area, Guamaoshan Scenic Area.
  • Juguang Township: Xiju Caipu'ao Geological Scenic Area, Dongju Fuzheng Coastal Scenic Area, Dongju Dongyangshan Trail Scenic Area, Dongju Lin'ao Island.
  • Matsu Islands Tern Conservation Area.

Currently, the Matsu Geological Park Association provides environmental education and ecological guided tours for certain attractions. Additionally, the Dongyin and Juguang Township Offices offer "Dongyin/Juguang from the Sea" travel experiences, allowing travelers to admire the magnificent features of Matsu's geology not only from land but also from a maritime perspective.
