Taiwan is home to more than 686 bird species, or about 7% of the world’s total. The Yunjianan Coastal Area in southwest Taiwan is blessed with a rich geography and ecology, including lagoons, alluvial sandbars, and salt pan wetlands. This provides a welcoming environment for birds to live and breed. The most famous are the rare Black-faced Spoonbills. The Yunjianan area is home to about 70% of the world’s population of these birds. The Taiwan International Bird Watching Marathon is a 24-hour non-stop exciting and interesting bird chasing event that crosses mountains and seas. It has become a bucket-list event for leading global birdwatching enthusiasts.
